About Dr. Choy

Yujuan Choy, M.D.

Dr. Choy is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry on volunteer faculty at the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at University of California, Irvine.

She is past president of the Orange County Psychiatric Society (OCPS, 2016-2018) and a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). She was honored by the Orange County Medication Association with the Physician of Excellence Award in 2016. When the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) was released by the APA in May 2013, Dr. Choy was designated by the APA as a DSM-5 trainer, and provided training to mental health professionals in Orange County.  

Dr. Choy has been working in the field of college mental health as a campus psychiatrist at the University of California, Irvine since 2006. Dr. Choy provides psychiatric services to undergraduates, graduates and professional students at UC Irvine. 

Dr. Choy is one of the physician authors in UpToDate, an evidence-based, practical, on-line clinical resource for practicing physicians.  She has authored a number of peer reviewed articles in psychiatry. See publications at the end of this page.

Education


Dr. Choy attended medical school at Cornell University Medical College in New York. She received the Richard N. Kohl Prize for Excellence in Psychiatry as a medical student at graduation. She was also named the Louis and Rachel Rudin Scholar to conduct research as a medical student at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

Dr. Choy received a full scholarship as a Philip Evans Scholar to complete her Bachelor of Arts degree at Swarthmore College, one of the top liberal arts colleges in the United States. She graduated with distinction, and was inducted into two of the most prestigious honors societies in America, the Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. She was also the recipient of several distinguished awards at Swarthmore College, including the Lucretia Mott Fellowship in Medicine and the Murry Bergtraum Medical Scholarship. 

Psychiatry Residency Training


Dr. Choy completed a general adult psychiatry residency at New York University (NYU) Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital, New York. She was appointed the chief resident in the residency program, during which time, she helped to educate psychiatry residents and NYU medical students. She also co-led the inpatient psychiatry unit at Tisch Hospital of NYU Medical Center. During the 911 World Trade Center disaster in 2001, she was part of the Bellevue Hospital disaster relief team where she provided crisis intervention and counseling to grieving family members, volunteers, firefighters and police officers at ground zero.

Anxiety Specialty


In addition to general psychiatric training, Dr. Choy has additional training in the evaluation and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders. Following her residency training, Dr. Choy went on to conduct clinical research in anxiety disorders in the department of psychiatry at Columbia University in New York, where she completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in mood and anxiety disorders. 

Dr. Choy worked closely with renowned experts and research leaders in the field of anxiety disorders, including Dr. Abby J. Fyer, Dr. Franklin R. Schneier and Dr. Richard G. Heimberg. As research fellow, she participated as a psychiatrist or cognitive behavioral therapist in research treatment programs in social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, specific phobia and obsessive compulsive disorder, at the Anxiety Disorders Clinic of the New York State Psychiatric Institute. 

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Training


Dr. Choy completed advanced training in cognitive behavioral therapy at the Beck Institute in Pennsylvania, and is credentialed by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. She received personal expert training from Dr. Richard Heimberg in cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder. She has attended numerous workshops and conferences related to cognitive behavioral therapy.
